Professional branding experts often advise companies that they should find out what sets them apart from similar companies. I never spent much time focusing on finding what made us different because to me, those of us who are real companies—that is, insured, with trained employees, etc., are all doing work that’s so similar that it’s difficult to find much difference.
However, a situation happened recently that caused me to think that perhaps we are far different than our competitors. A client contacted me and shared a crisis that her family was enduring. As a result of that crisis, she was going to need to discontinue services—at least for a while. And on top of that, she was downsizing to a smaller place.
Without hesitation, I emailed her and offered her a free cleaning of her new place. With all that was going on in her life, and because she had been such a wonderful client, that was the least I could do.
Very few cleaning companies (or any other type of company for that matter) would have offered a free cleaning. A discount? Maybe. But not free. Yet, I did so without hesitation or second thought. It’s not really important to me to be “different” from my competition. But I believe that if I had to share how we are different, it would be around the fact that we refuse to view our clients as a number or just a source of income. We care about each and every client individually. Our clients know that if they call or email a concern, it will be taken care of right away. And that’s what sets us apart. We have compassion, which most companies lack.
